My passion is the struggling reader. This course has enlightened and empowered me at the number of novel strategies at our finger tips to help our struggling readers. As Reading Specialists, we are the guardian angels to those children who struggle academically, especially in reading. It is painful to see our children with a” Lost” look and no light in their eyes as they struggle each day at school. The combination of technology and the “50 Content Area Strategies for Adolescent Literacy “ Douglas fisher …et al (2007) (Hope you remember that book:)are strong tools for us to assist both the class teacher and struggling reader

ReplyDeleteThe technology is great however internet is needed. There has to be a serious restructuring of the education system if our struggling readers are to benefit. Each classroom has to be equipped with internet access and necessary software to be really effective. I am grateful thus far that the applications being used are free. Now the task lies ahead to link technology to remediation so as to enhance learning for the struggling reader.
ReplyDeleteI must admit that this course has its challenges. However I have learned a lot from our sessions. Each session has been interesting and has taken me out of my comfort zone at times. I like the interaction and also the impact that these new literacies wil bring to our students and our classroom.
ReplyDeleteHi Kathleen,
ReplyDeleteGood day to you. I can't forget the "50 Content Area Strategies" by Fisher. That book is almost like a dictionary of strategies for me. Struggling readers also touch my heart. You see Kathleen, when students are not able to read, I believe that they are locked away in a closet. We need to open the doors of the closet for them to breathe and get some light. With the assistance of the book “50 Content Area Strategies” teachers are armed with the tools and strategies to open closed doors. We must be able to embrace the struggling reader and move him towards reading freedom.
