These sessions have all been eye openers. As Technology unfolds, we are all motivated by all we have seen and experimented/ practised. We are aware of the numerous challenges facing us.
· No Internet in schools
· No furnished computer labs
· No computer labs
· Teachers who are not “digital ready”
· Teachers who need to be trained
· Teachers who are not willing to keep with the times
· Administrators who are not willing to incorporate the technology for whatever reason
Sylvester R., & Greenidge W., (2008) list a number of challenges teachers may face using digital stories. They also stated that perhaps struggling writers may be motivated to use digital technologies because they are more literate in new literacies and use them to scaffold traditional literacy.( Reading Teacher 63(4)pgs. 284-295
Technology in our schools is getting there slowly but surely. We do face several challenges in accomplishing this, such as money, security and readiness of teachers to incorporate its use into the curriculum.
ReplyDeleteEven though the Ministry of Education (MOE)receives a very large share of our country's national pie, we never seem to possess sufficient resources to truely modernise our education system. In instances when schools do purchase equipment, they sometimes disappear within short a period of time. The MOE needs to take a serious look at the system and come up with the best method of bringing technology into every classroom.
I think that there is hope for the future. We seem to have a government that realizes that technology is the way forward. They have already committed to giving free laptops to the new secondary entrants. I believe that this will be the spring board for all schools to be fully equipped with fully functioning computer labs. When someone realizes that there are seventeen thousand students with laptops and no facilities to use them plans will have to be made .Another fact that has to be considered is whether there are sufficient teachers with the technological skills necessary to assist students to make the best use of technology . Teachers' technological skill is the key component to how much value a student gets out of classroom technology. Every teacher who has not been exposed to this course should be asked to pursue it right now. All of us need to reach all students by offering them the same tools that they spend most of their time experimenting with.
ReplyDeleteOur schools really need to be properly equipped in order for us to truly utilize and implement what we are learning. Schools need to go beyond just having a centralized lab, the use of which must be rostered. I continue to hope that even as we learn, our classrooms will one day be provided with the necessary hardware and software to support the integration of the technology in the teaching of our lessons.
